Parr Appointed Chair
Effective July 1, Ronald Parr will succeed Carlo Tomasi as department chair. Parr's research area is artificial intelligence. He joined the department as an assistant professor in 2000 and was promoted to full professor in 2013.
Looking back on his path from assistant professor to chair, Parr thinks he made the right choice in coming to Duke, "The support and opportunities I enjoyed not only helped me succeed, but gave me a sense of investment in the Duke CS community." Noting the rapidly changing academic environment where nearly every field is becoming data-driven and computational, Parr observes, "The research and education missions of the department have never been more important to the university; these are exciting times for us and for Duke."
Of his predecessor, Parr notes, "I will have some big shoes to fill. Carlo was a tireless advocate for the department, and his efforts led to the development and improvement of our department in countless ways." Parr also praised the tenor of Tomasi's leadership, "Carlo's fairness and compassion earned him the highest respect and admiration from students, faculty, and staff."
